Movie Review: "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" 09/30/88

This is a movie review for "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark", released September 30, 1988. We watched this via Netflix, if I remember correctly, or was it Hulu or the Roku channel? Anyways, through a streaming service.

Plot

Elvira is a horror-viewing show hostess. She gets a letter saying that she just recently lost her great aunt Morgana and needs to come to the quaint town of Fallwell. However, it isn't all that because the town is super conservative and she's, well, not their "type". She dresses in black with a lot of boob (not just cleavage) and legs showing. She drives a big old black car (1959 Ford Thunderbird).

Her uncle Vincent ("Vinnie") also wants a chunk of the inheritance from Morgana but Elvira gets the house, the dog, and a book. Mind you, the book is not just any book but Elvira doesn't know that right away. What does Vincent get? If I remember correctly, nothing. Hahahaha.... Serves you right, jerk.

Between dealing with her uncle's want for the book, the rigid people of Fallwell (with their rules and closed-minded ideologies), and her want to get out of the town so she can go to Vegas to fulfill her dream, can Elvira make it through? Will she see her dream come true as a star on the Vegas strip? Will the townsfolk of Fallwell stay sticks in the mud or will they be "corrupted" by Elvira's presence?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

4/5 - *SPOILERS* I have heard so much about Elvira. In fact, one year during college, I tried to dress as Morticia Addams and people asked if I was trying to be Elvira. It confused me so I had to look her up. No, I have never watched the show but she does seem very enchanting. [And so much boob that I am not surprised how many men watched/watch the show or have a crush on Cassandra Peterson! Like, even more of a crush than on Counselor Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation.]

This movie was pretty interesting, especially with dealing with the super-conservative folks of the town and to watch the youth of the town banding together to help/support Elvira.

My husband and I started laughing hysterically when Elvira tried to cook for Bob. "Hey look, it's Gracie cooking!" I agreed and shook my head. The results seem similar sometimes, but I'm still trying to learn how to cook (I really am, though not doing well at it).

And the results of the cooking [to 1:34, the rest is learning about what the book/Elvira is]:

Not much for character building aside showing the town of Fallwell to stop being a stick in the mud. The movie has decent music. It has a terrible ending to the movie though Elvira got her dream of going to Vegas. [The end of this video clip is literally the end of the movie....]

Cheesy/campy is the best way to describe this movie. It isn't a complete waste of time, but definitely NOT for children or people with sensitivities (especially towards skin/boob exposure and witchcraft).  I wouldn't be opposed to watching other things from Elvira, but wouldn't watch this one again.

Recommended for those that need a bit of "dark"/horror humor that is also kinda stupid.

That's my review! Thanks for watching. Many more reviews to come including "Jigsaw" 2017, "The Emoji Movie", and "The Hobbit" trilogy, so keep watching for them to come. :-D
