Plot
In the world of the emoticons used in your messenger, every emoticon has their own role. If you are a poop, you're always a poop. If you're a smiler, you're always supposed to be smiling (no matter the circumstance). For the "meh" family, they are always supposed be neutral and act "meh". However, for Gene Meh, he has an issue with that because he feels many different emotions. This deviation to the norm causes the phone user to want to reset the whole phone.
How can Gene live up to being a meh? Why must he be stuck in a certain emotion? Will he ever fit in? Or can he prove that those with more than one emotion can be accepted? Above all, can he stop the user from deleting EVERYTHING on the phone?
Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.
2/5 - *SPOILERS* Oh my gosh, seriously.... This is so lame. Like it is a movie advertisement for Candy Crush, Just Dance, YouTube and a few other things. Gene runs around on the background of the phone, passing through these apps, as he tries to make his way (with the egotistical Hi-5 and the strange Jailbreak) to the Dropbox so he can access the Cloud and reset his code. Smiler also sends robots to get rid of Gene because he is a threat to the norm.
Along the way to the Dropbox, he is supposed to have character development but not him nor his two companions really do. Sure, he manages to get Jailbreak to try dancing and Gene does rescue Hi-5 after he was trapped in the erasing Just Dance app [by going to the recycle bin to retrieve him], but there isn't much character development or relationship development. Oh, but he does find out that she's a Princess emoji.
The dancing is kinda cool but lame....
Mel Meh (Gene's dad) professes to his wife Mary Meh that he also has the multiple-emotions malfunction. Does this really change things? No, but gives us a bit of "this is why" Gene is odd. Mel does try to stand up for his son but is also threatened to be taken out because of his malfunction.
Anyways, Gene's odd multiple-emotion malfunction gets them beyond the Firewall because the word was the user's crush's name and could only be tried with one emotion at a time. He also saves the phone, at last second, by being scanned with a changing emotion emoticon that was sent to the user's crush. She said that was pretty cool and asked him to the dance, so he stopped the delete and life continued. For one, a complete phone wipe can't be stopped during the process (DUH!). For two, the coincidence that they were able to send the emoticon at last second and she was able to respond IMMEDIATELY in person is so ridiculous that I just shook my head while watching and muttered WTF.
It is a cute movie but the logic behind it is flawed, even for a kid movie. The violence in the movie (while not as bad as someone slicing you up Saw style) is still pretty bad. To have Smiler smiling as she orders for the robots to destroy Gene and his family for the malfunction did some scarring on my being - it is absolutely the worst to have someone act or be joyful when they are sending something terrible your way!
Not recommended for anyone, in my opinion. Your choice, though, so don't say I didn't warn you. [Stick to something like Lilo & Stitch or The Incredibles (though the bad dude was wiping supers out) over this.]
That's my review! Thank you for reading.
More reviews are on their way so keep an eye out.
