Movie Review: "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" 12/13/13

This is a movie review for "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug", released December 13, 2013. This is the second movie of the "The Hobbit" trilogy. The first movie was "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", for which my review is here.

For those that read the book "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, I will warn you that the whole trilogy is NOT like the book. They do have the world of Middle Earth and those that made this trilogy used the musical themes they had in the Lord of the Rings trilogy but that's pretty much about it for comparison.

Trailer

Cast

Ian McKellen                       Gandalf
Martin Freeman                   Bilbo
Richard Armitage                Thorin
Cate Blanchett                    Galadriel
Orlando Bloom                    Legolas
Evangeline Lily                    Tauriel
Luke Evans                          Bard

{AGAIN: Many more cast actors/actresses, especially since the Dwarf group consists of 12 dwarves. Thorin is the leader and therefore I mentioned the actor for him.}

Plot

Still making their way towards the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their homeland, a company of dwarves accompanied by a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins and a wizard named Gandalf come across many obstacles in the way. Can they make it to the mountain before their time runs out?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

4/5 - *SPOILERS* I admit, the first time I heard that Legolas was in this set of movies, I was angry. Legolas was NEVER in the book but no, we need to pull people that were in the first made trilogy so to bring in as many interested parties as possible. Like using Orlando Bloom how many times in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies because all the gals thought he was freaking hot? Yeah, like that but as a bow-wielding elvish prince. Oh, by the way, Legolas is actually a prince, not just Gimli throwing names at him because he disliked elves. Legolas' father is a king of one of the elf lands like Elrond is of Rivendell and Galadriel is of Lothlorien. And to make matters more complicated, let's throw in a female elf that has a huge crush on Legolas and is one of the guards of the king's land, but then she turns to have a crush on one of the dwarves after they capture the company [go figure].

Plotline is fluffed up, again, with perils that the book never had but at least most of the fluff is understandable [like getting caught by Legolas' elves, having to be smuggled into the Lake Town via Bard covering them in barrels and filling the barrels full of fish, etc]. Beorn is an exception to this "understandable fluff" because WTF is this beast-man thing? No Tolkien book of this series has anything to say about people that turn into beasts.

The best thing about this movie was the dragon. I honestly was really excited to see the dragon and was rooting for the dragon to win (though obviously he wouldn't because he dies in the book, but here's to hoping! Maybe he'd take out a dwarf or two but no....).

The ending was very much a cliff-hanger so that was terrible. I know that the dragon will be killed in the next movie but I was looking forward to watching the dragon destroy as much as possible, showing the dwarves and the people of Lake Town how they should fear such a formidable force.

That's my review! Thanks for reading.
More reviews are on their way, including the next one of "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies". Keep watch.
