Movie Review: "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" 12/17/14

This is a movie review for "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies", released December 17, 2014. This is the third of the "The Hobbit" series, the first being "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (movie review is here) and the second being "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" (movie review is here).

For those that read the book "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, I will warn you that the whole trilogy is NOT like the book. They do have the world of Middle Earth and those that made this trilogy used the musical themes they had in the Lord of the Rings trilogy but that's pretty much about it for comparison.

Trailer

Cast

Ian McKellen                       Gandalf
Martin Freeman                   Bilbo
Richard Armitage                Thorin
Hugo Weaving                     Elrond

Luke Evans                          Bard

{AGAIN: Many more cast actors/actresses, especially since the Dwarf group consists of 12 dwarves. Thorin is the leader and therefore I mentioned the actor for him.}

Plot

The dwarf party has finally made it to the Lonely Mountain and managed to get the dragon Smaug out of it, but headed towards Lake Town. As Lake Town tries to survive the attack from the fiery winged menace, the dwarves barricade themselves in so they can protect their domain. Bard fights against the dragon in Lake Town while Legolas and Tauriel follow an orc away from the town to find that the orcs are planning to attack the Lonely Mountain. Legolas' father and their kin also come down to fight for the Elvish silver heirlooms that were taken from them years ago. Can there be peace with Thorin as the king of the mountain or will there be a *spoilers?* five army battle?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3/5 - *SPOILERS* About 95% of this movie is NOT according to the book, just to clarify.

The five armies: Thorin and his little band of dwarves (and Bilbo) in the mountain, Thorin's cousin with an army, Legolas' father's army, the army of men that survived the Lake Town attack by Smaug, and the orc army.

Tauriel and her dwarf lover have their little love plot going but oh wait he's not going to survive and she's going to be completely devastated.

Thorin (the dwarf king of the Lonely Mountain) is now completely mad: he's getting selfish, forgetting his promises, becoming paranoid and not trusting even those that were in his party on the trek from Bilbo's house to the mountain (even after all the crap they had to deal with), etc. So how can he recover from this madness brought on by the dragon's gold? Well, that's where this white orc lord comes in with the vengeance crap and his army. What a poor conclusion to that story line....

At least two of the dwarves are killed by the orc army, aside Thorin - Tauriel's lover and his brother.

Bilbo survives. No surprise there because we saw him writing the story in the first installment of the trilogy but seriously how the hell does a halfling survive such a dramatic battle?

Gandalf survives. Again, no surprise.

Legolas does some "physics are nothing for elves" moves while battling, where I just wanted to find a silver bullet or some crap to take his show-off moves down. He survives but is devastated to see Tauriel in pieces over her dwarf lover's death. His father sends him to go search out Aragorn "Strider". [Again, not in the book, thank you.]

At the end, Bilbo leaves the mountain and heads back home. He finds his things being auctioned off because he had "disappeared" and feared dead. He proves he is himself with the piece of parchment that says he was working with Thorin and the company. When asked who Thorin was, Bilbo responds with a "he was my friend". End of movie..... WTF.

The best part of the movie was dealing with the dragon (which was maybe like 20 minutes at the beginning). Everything else was just crap. Over dramatized elvish moves, over dramatized romance plot, too many armies showing up JUST right after Thorin takes the mountain [I mean, how did they all know to show up then when there are no news or cell phones or whatnot?!], etc.

As the most deviated movie from the book, this movie was more of a stand-alone movie. Even as a stand-alone movie, this movie was just terrible. I am glad I didn't pay money to see this in the theater because I am extremely disappointed.

Feel free to view the movie if you wish but I personally don't recommend it. I agree with my friends saying that the "The Hobbit" trilogy is not really good, and is considered especially terrible compared to the book.  If it was a "stand alone" of the trilogy suggestion and you could understand it without the context of the other movies, I would say that the second one "Desolation of Smaug" was the best of the three but still failed to meet expectations.

That's my review so thanks for reading!
More reviews are to come so please keep an eye out for them.
