Movie Review: "The Magic Pill" 09/07/17 AUSTRALIA

This is a movie review for "The Magic Pill", released September 07, 2017 in Australia. I watched this around the beginning of April 2019 via Netflix.

Trailer

Plot

Humans are having issues medically - cancer, diabetes, autism, etc. So many of the pharmaceutical industry say that you just need to add more medicines to your life: add one for the diabetes, one for the weight loss, one for high cholesterol, etc.

Maybe there is a better way to treat and conquer these illnesses/diseases? How about lowering processed foods (including breads), eating more good oils, and cooking at home more?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

4/5 - Interesting documentary about the ketogenic diet. I personally find the Knives over Forks diet better or the vegan diet better, but the idea of going for more of a whole foods diet is good. I like that they were trying to say that coconut oil and peanut oil is better for you when you cook than vegetable oil, but not all "bad oils" are bad. The key to a decent diet is moderation and modifying the diet according to your specific body. Not everyone can eat the same thing, especially with allergies and lifestyles (especially pregnancy). Suggested to watch this for another view on dietary suggestions, but don't take it for "the Bible" on what you personally should do.

Movie Review: "Mermaid's Song" 09/26/2015 CANADA

This is a movie review for "Mermaid's Song", released September 26, 2015. I watched this on March 23, 2019 via Hulu. The original title of this movie was "Charlotte's Song", which I found had a better trailer than the official trailer for this movie (as seen below). I have included the official trailer for your viewing though I prefer the original title's trailer.

Trailer

Charlotte's Song trailer:

Official Trailer:

Cast

Iwan Rheon                 Randall
Katelyn Mager         Charlotte
Brendan Taylor         George

Plot

A mermaid was rescued by a human male and they fell in love. He kept her from returning to the ocean so a bargain was made. Eventually, a replacement would have to return to the ocean since the original mermaid was unable to. The man (George) and the woman (Serena?) had six daughters. They started a song and dance show (and bar) that capitalized on the woman's mermaid song to entice and entrance the men that came to visit.

Mother tries to save her youngest daughter (Charlotte) so that she wouldn't have to leave home. The only way she can think of potentially saving her daughter is to sacrifice her own life. With mother gone, father has to find a way to provide for their 6 daughters alone. As it is during the depression (dust bowl) in the 1930s, the bar/show was struggling as was before mother's death but without mother to entrance the guests, the family started to struggle even more. The requirement of Charlotte becoming a full mermaid is still an issue and now, with the help of a mafia man named Randall, father has changed the show into a more risque show and started prostituting out the girls. When one of Randall's guards tries to take interest in Charlotte, she turns mermaid on him.

The question is how can Charlotte, a young teenager about 15 years of age, survive? Can she stay human or must she become mermaid? Does she have to return to the ocean or can she stay amongst her family? How can their family come out the stronger after so many bad things have happened?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3/5 - *SPOILERS* Good movie and interesting plot, especially with the Mafia leader dude Randall being a supernatural creature that was not fully defined/shown during the movie. Interesting that the girl was able to transform into the mermaid to exact revenge on the Mafia folk and her father, transform back to the humanoid form, and be able to walk around like almost nothing happened.

Overall, it was not a bad movie. Yes, the dialogue of the actors is very quiet so it is hard to hear but that is not a major issue if you like subtitles like I do. It is a very good dark version of Hans Christian Anderson's story, though I have never read it myself, and the effects of the transformations to mermaid form are amazing. The change from changing into mermaid, exacting revenge as a vicious creature, transforming back to human, and walking around as if the transformation didn't take energy out of her really bothers me. Changing forms should have taken something out of her, especially since she is so young and not used to her mermaid form. Aside that, not too bad. NOT for children because of the violence, prostitution, alcohol, and other things, but I recommend if you have some time and want to see a darker version of a beloved story.

More reviews are to come so keep an eye out for them! Thank you for reading my review.

Movie Review: "Knights of Badassdom" 09/25/13 ISRAEL

This is a movie review for "Knights of Badassdom", released September 25, 2013. I watched this on March 17, 2019 via Tubi.

Trailer

Cast

Sean Cook           Winston
Peter Dinklage    Hung
Summer Glau            Gwen
Steve Zahn                 Eric
Margarita Levieva    Beth

Plot

After Joe is dumped by Beth, he wants to waste away at home. His two friends (Eric and Hung) won't have it. They kidnap him and take him to a medieval LARP [Live Action Role Play] game but since Joe is taking over a new position in the game, the wizard Eric needs to summon him into the game. Unfortunately, he uses a sacred book during the fake summoning and summons an actual succubus (female demon from hell). Oh, and it happens to have the appearance of Joe's ex (Beth) because he was thinking of her after the break up.

How can they send the demon back to hell? How can they survive? And who (if anyone) is going to get with the hot Gwen?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3.5/5 - *SPOILERS*  Summer Glau was the best of the movie: sexy, sarcastic and aloft, and intelligent. The plotline was messed up but interesting to watch: Summoning a succubus/demon (in the appearance of your recent ex) because they were playing LARP and beating it with his music, seriously? Honestly, the demon defeat song is pretty awesome. I wish they had incorporated more of Joe's music in the movie but that was so background that it made the plotline go "wtf, here's a song".

The defeat of the succubus:

Anyways, I wouldn't recommend it for someone that values their movie watching time and it is definitely NOT for children. I won't watch this again unless someone else suggests it.

That's my movie review. More reviews to come, so keep an eye out for them!

Movie Review: "Tangled" 11/24/10

This is a movie review for "Tangled" released November 24, 2010. I watched this on March 13, 2019.

Trailer

Cast

Mandy Moore                           Rapunzel (voice)
Zachary Levi                           Flynn Rider (voice)
Donna Murphy                   Mother Gothel (voice)

Plot

This is Disney's take on Rapunzel: bad boy thief meets very sheltered (and very pretty) girl. She wants to see the world and he wants to stay out of prison, with his booty that he stole from the palace. Where will their path together lead? And above all, who is this girl and why was she sheltered?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3.5/5 - *SPOILERS* Songs were super cheesy (and can REALLY get stuck in your head - see below the videos that I have added) and the horse was not believable [and definitely not nearly as awesome as Altivo from "The Road to El Dorado"] but the story was decent (though unrealistic). I liked how they came up with this flower to create the story but it still seemed a bit weird. I liked the fact that the old woman turned into nothing because she lost contact/control with the flower to keep her young but why did Eugene cut Rapunzel's hair before he was healed? Just to make sure that she would be free? Good intention but you died because of it, dummy. Luckily her tear brought you back to life because no one expected that.

Mother Gothel trying to convince Rapunzel to stay in the tower in the song "Mother Knows Best":

Movie Review: "Suspiria" 08/12/77

This is a movie review for "Suspiria", released August 12, 1977. I watched this on February 6, 2019.

Trailer

Cast

Jessica Harper                 Suzy Bannion
Stefania Casini         Sara

{Many others in the cast but these two were essential.}

Plot

A young ballet dancer (Suzy) is accepted to attend a prestigious dance school in Germany but, from the moment that she arrives at the school, things seem off. For example, a gal that she meets outside the school building ends up being killed, a blind pianist is mauled to death by his guide dog, etc. Can Suzy find out what is behind all of the issues at the school? Is it more complex than sheer pressure to be excellent?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3.5/5 - Slow and trippy beginning with a flat ending; not much body to the movie aside the fact that it seemed a lot of coincidences were happening: the first gal leaving (and dying), the blind pianist's dog turning on him, and the investigating girl (Sara) winding up dead. Oh, and WTF with Sara being manipulated to come back to attack Suzy.

*SPOILERS* The staff of the school are witches from a coven and are casting spells on the students (and on Daniel) especially when they want to leave from the control/power the school has over them.

I am curious if the new remake is better but haven't seen it yet. It is not high on my priority list, honestly, because this one was dry and far too trippy for a murder/paranormal investigation movie IMHO.

That's my review. Thanks for reading! More reviews to come eventually so keep an eye out for them.
