Movie Review: "Dream House" 09/30/11

This is a movie review for "Dream House", released September 30, 2011.

Trailer

Cast

Daniel Craig                       Will Atenton
Naomi Watts                      Ann Patterson
Rachel Weisz                     Libby
Elias Koteas                  Boyce

Claire Geare                      Dee Dee

Plot

Will Atenton and his family (wife and two daughters) just got their dream house. However, this house comes with more issues than they expected. Is someone stalking them, looking in the window and whatnot? And then they hear that there were murderers in the house! Why did the neighbors, the realtor, and the police not warn them? How can they survive? Can they stand up for their own house and the way of their life?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

4.5/5 - *SPOILERS*

This is one of the best movies I have seen all year! It seems like a stalker/home-invasion movie but turns out to be a mystery and very psychological. Yeah, so Will's family was murdered in that house beforehand and he just returned home (imagining his family there). After finding out about his family's death, he tries to solve out who did do the murders and why.

I had a hard time guessing the plot except the weird ex of the neighbor made me suspect him. He acted like a jerk from the get-go and was suspicious. Of course, he also had a temper so his deal in the plotline was suspected. Surprise, he hired someone to kill the neighbor 5 years ago (to get full custody of their daughter) and that hired assassin fucked up, went to the wrong house and killed Will's family.

He also had karma for him hiring an assassin to kill his ex. He burned to death in the basement because he wanted his way and caused his neighbors' deaths, though he (for the second time) tried to get his ex to be killed. Oh, and don't turn against your hired help or they might turn against you, which causes your death. Smooth, man. What an idiot but it is nice to see that he got what he deserved.

This is a great movie. Highly suggested but DO NOT bring your children to watch this. There is one scene in particular that would terrify children - Dee Dee and Trish acting out their death (can't breathe, getting cold, etc). But as a psychological mystery about a home-invasion/murder, this is AMAZING. I would definitely watch this again.

That's my review. Thanks for reading! More reviews always are to come.

Yeardley Smith              Connie

On June 19, 1987 at 9:47 am Eastern Standard Time, planet Earth passes through the tail of a rogue comet, Rhea-M, for just over a week.

Electronics start going rogue against humans due to this meteor's influence. Lawnmowers attack humans, Walkmans electrocute the people who are listening to it via the headset, wtc.

A group of folks start gathering at a gas station/restaurant named Dixie Boy (the owner, staff, and a few truckers). Soon a newlywed couple named Curt and Connie, a Bible-thumper with a hitchhiker, and one of the staff's son join them. How can they survive the madness of the murderous machines, including all of those semis that are on site asking for diesel to stay "alive"? Will humans get on top again or will this be the end of humankind?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3.5/5 -

Thumbs down for AC/DC only music. Seriously, give us some variety. Throw in some Eagles or something. Listening to overplayed songs from AC/DC really made me dislike the movie.

The "we found love" connection for Bill was terrible and over dramatized. "Oh, you're such a hero. Let's have sex." And then "I really care about you more than a one-time fling." WTF.

The newlywed woman was too high-pitched and annoying. Tone it down, girl. Sure, you're scared but that high of a pitch is disgusting.

The baseball kid's connection to the mechanic was not brought up until after the fact his dad was dead and he had struggled all the way to the gas station [not random circumstance]. I thought he was just some random kid but twist he's related to someone! Smooth....

Okay, so the electronics of the world is attacking and the station's waitress loses her head at the machines as she screams "we made you", though these machines are controlling their environment. If these semi trucks are trying to squish you when you are outside, give them respect! Semi trucks are HUGE compared to a helpless human. Don't get mad at the machines and provoke them.

Okay, this next one really bugged me: there was a HUGE coincidence that they left the gas station RIGHT before the machines destroyed it. I mean, the semi trucks wanted fuel, yes, but why did they wait until right after the humans left to destroy the gas station? They should have just destroyed it right after they drained the diesel tanks dry. There was no reason to let the humans rest a bit after the hot day fueling a massive caravan of semi trucks. Do you realize how many gallons a semi truck holds? About 100-400 gallons per truck times like 50 trucks in the line-up. And it takes a while to fuel when you don't have a fast-fuel nozzle system. As a bus driver, I can say that it takes near 20 minutes to fuel a bus (in a twice a week fuel setting) full and that is maybe 100 gallons. So 20 minutes times 50 trucks in the heat. Yeah, and the semi trucks give the humans a break afterwards before they destroy the building? Seems unreasonable, but these are animated machines so do they have reason?

Anyways, decent plot but no character development aside the "we found love" couple. The best bit is King's cameo at the beginning: "come over here, sugarbuns. This machine just called me an asshole".

So in summary, the idea of the plot was interesting (as is typical of Stephen King stories) but there was little character development, terrible music, a few of the character flaws shown were beyond annoying even when dealing with a machine-taking-over apocalypse, and some logic was thrown out the window. Oh, and the ending? *SPOILERS* The survivors of Dixie Boy survived the apocalypse and are still surviving. Not joking, there was a typed clip at the end saying just that.

That's my review. Thanks for reading. Watch if you wish but realize that you have been warned, from one Stephen King fan to you: it isn't the best King tale rendition out there (in my honest opinion). Go to Stephen King's "The Shining" mini-series for that.

More movie reviews to come eventually, as always.

Movie Review: "Geostorm" 10/20/17

This is a movie review for "Geostorm", released October 20, 2017.

Trailer

Cast

Gerard Butler                         Jake Lawson
Jim Sturgess                           Max Lawson
Abbie Cornish                       Sarah Wilson
Alexandra Maria Lara        Ute Fassbinder

Andy Garcia                        President Andrew Palma
Ed Harris                             Leonard Dekkom

Plot

To help prevent major natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, etc., the world came up with a program called Dutch Boy. It is named after the story of the Dutch boy that diverted a dam flooding the town by plugging it up by putting his thumb/finger into a hole that had developed.
This program has a space station to be the main control center for all of these hundreds of satellites set up around the world (in the atmosphere), which each is supposed to monitor and adjust the weather/atmosphere as needed to prevent said disasters.

Anyways, the main person in charge (Jake Lawson, played by Gerard Butler) is kicked off of the program due to differences in view between himself and the United States government. His brother, Max Lawson, takes over as main man in charge but is under the government's thumb/control.

Years pass and suddenly there is a malfunction with the Dutch Boy. How can we fix it? Get Jake and send him up to the space station that is the main hub for controlling so to figure out what happened to the Dutch Boy. And things continue to happen which makes us wonder, can the world survive? Is this a mere coincidence? Can they stop the chain of events before it goes to critical (a geostorm that would never be able to be stopped and would destroy the world)?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3/5 - *SPOILERS*
First, Gerard Butler is awesome as always but this isn't his best role. But dealing with the movie, the plot seems okay but also very simple. They make up with the special effects and a few twists (of which some are predictable). Like "could it be sabotage? But who could be behind it?". Umm, political influence was definitely my first guess. I didn't guess the Secretary of State who wanted power… My first thought was that it would be the President but Secretary of State trying for all of the power, to the point of trying to kill off all of the line of power ahead of him (if the President dies, then it goes to the Vice President, then....). Oh and let's just kill off civilians so we can keep the power of the Dutch Boy in America. Call it greed! That is the main plot of the movie: someone using technology (that happens to play "God" with weather) to get power.

So, Jake had to get a message to his brother Max via a monitored line (from the space station down to Washington D.C.): sabotage and high government involvement. He uses a code and my response was "Nice code, by the way. Sad that your dad never took you fishing but good to know that your brother remembered the code AND the phone number!"

Oh, and very coincidental that the brother is dating a Secret Service gal who so happened to have the level of clearance to figure out the plot of the Secretary of State planning to murder everyone above him for power using Dutch Boy. Seriously, where is the realism supposed to be in this movie?!

Jake surviving the explosion of the space station (with the main engineer staying behind and showing up PERFECTLY at the moment she is needed) was ridiculous. Sure, you need to keep your promise to your daughter that you'd come back but you supposedly have been terrible at keeping promises before this so... Let's just inexplicably and unrealistically save the day and do a Hail Mary to be saved, to be saved miraculously by the crew that had left the soon-to-explode station earlier. This really dropped the rating down. They should have let him go down with the station like Armaggedon's Harry Stamper did to miraculously save the world at last minute, in my opinion.

And the fishing at the end? Unnecessary, but decent try for "getting along better".

Good special effects with the destruction and freezing and melting and whatnot: big kudos for those!

In my personal opinion, this movie should have been closer to 1.5/5 because it was terrible (plotline, character development, etc.) but was redeemed by the decent special effects to make it a 3/5. Without the special effects showing the weather catastrophes, it definitely would have been given a lower rating.

Anyways, that's my review. Highly recommended for the special effects but very highly not recommended if you want good character development and decent plotline.

Thanks for reading! More reviews to come, as always, so keep a look out for them.

Movie Review: "Food Evolution" 06/23/17

This is a movie review for "Food Evolution", released June 23, 2017. I watched this via Hulu.

Trailer

Plot

GMOs: good or bad. This movie tries to be as "unbiased" as possible debating on whether GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are good or bad, starting with teaching what they are and how they might be able to help but also showing some opposition to them.

2.5/5 - Unbiased my rear. Like they couldn't be more biased towards GMOs are good. True, some GMOs are good but not ALL of them. Even if saving bananas from banana wilt in Africa and saving the rainbow papaya are good news for GMOs, why say that all (generalizing is a BAD thing) are good?

Have you seen what Monsanto is having to deal with lately with their Round-Up ready seeds causing illnesses? Not all GMOs are good and not all are bad but this movie is very biased though it does give some info on GMOs.

This video below is not about Round-Up Ready GMO seeds but those seeds have Round-Up genetically engineered into the seeds.

Does this give you concern, considering how many Monsanto seeds are out in the farming industry? Or will you willingly just take GMOs as they are? Like I said, not all of the GMOs are this bad but who knows. Maybe they are but that's hard to determine as of this moment to figure it out. On the other hand, how can you be certain that going "organic" is good, especially with the prices they put the produce and whatnot at for organic food?

Please research if you are interested but remember that this video, though a bit informative, is biased towards ALL GMOs are good.

That's my review. More to come eventually. Thanks for reading!

Movie Review: "Scream" 12/20/96

This is a movie review for "Scream", released December 20, 1996. I have this (as well as Scream 2) on VHS because someone suggested to watch it.

Trailer

Cast

Drew Barrymore           Casey Becker
Roger Jackson                 Phone Voice
Neve Campbell               Sidney Prescott
Skeet Ulrich                    Billy Loomis
Courteney Cox               Gale Weathers
Rose McGowan              Tatum Riley
David Arquette              Deputy Dewey

Plot

A killer shows up in town and kills two teenagers (Casey and her boyfriend). Of course, a murderer on the loose is big news in the small town. Sidney Prescott, still reeling from her mother being murdered last year, is traumatized by the idea of a loose murderer. To top that off, she gets a call from the killer (like Casey got before the murderer killed her).  How can Sidney and her friends survive this killer?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

2.5/5 - For being a "classic" that so many say to watch, I find this movie to rot. Acting was lame, plotline was lacking, and the "action" was just not enough to keep me truly entertained. So what if Drew Barrymore had a memorable part in this movie but the rest of the movie was so blah.

As I said, poor acting even by Drew Barrymore. Sure, 90s movies have different standards of "this is the best of the time" but even so, the acting was bad. Even some 70s movies have better acting than this one! I don't see what is so amazing about this movie... I personally do not want to watch this again. [Oh, and I had to watch it twice to get a better basis for this review, so there's that. Even the second time was lame.]

Well, that's my review. Not worthwhile in my opinion. Of course, if you like bad acting and poor plotline development, go for it at your own expense.

Movie Review: "Bruce Almighty" 05/23/03

This is a movie review for "Bruce Almighty", released May 23, 2003. I watched this on Netflix. I have previously watched this years ago but decided to do a review for it.

Trailer

Cast
Jim Carrey                      Bruce Nolan
Morgan Freeman          God
Jennifer Aniston            Grace Connelly
Steve Carell                     Evan Baxter

Plot

Bruce Nolan is a news reporter trying to get the local news anchor position for the station, keep a decent relationship with his live-in girlfriend, and keep sane. He tries all that he humanly can but still feels like life (and God) has taken a crap on him, especially when his coworker Evan gets the anchor position.

His life changes when God challenges him to "do better" at being God. But, as Peter Parker's uncle said, with great power comes great responsibility. Can Bruce handle playing as God? Will it make his career better? Can he get the anchor position? Will it improve the relationship with his girlfriend Grace? Or will all the power drive him over a different edge?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3/5 - *SPOILERS*

First off, why name the girlfriend Grace of all names? It could have been Rachel or Sarah or Isabelle or Lisa or whatever but "Grace" is like trying to talk about 'grace of God' or whatnot. I don't like that but whatever.

Secondly, it was kinda funny trying to see Bruce being God though just in one small area of the world. At first, it is all about him: improve his girlfriend's boob size, get laid with amazing sex, see some woman's panties when her dress is lifted with an unexpected gust of wind (Marilyn Monroe style), a new car and tons of news stories. After starting to hear whispers (prayers), he does try to help people by granting wishes but that causes chaos.

Thirdly, the moral of the story is brought to light when he realizes that God gives all humans the freedom of will - God (and God-like Bruce) cannot make someone love him. All of the devotion to God must be chosen from the human's side. And God isn't trying to make Bruce's life terrible but sometimes it just happens. With the freedom of will, things happen that may cause pain or hardship for the human but the human had freedom of will to choose to be a good person, to love and to have faith.

I personally downgraded the rating for this movie because, for the genre of comedy, it wasn't very funny. The answering prayers scene was interesting but the rest of the movie was kinda bland. I was put off the most about the subtle hint of 'God's grace' through the naming of Grace [I know, my pen name is Gracie but I meant it to be a mocking of the fact my family calls me grace-less/clumsy, not a faith-based name like some may think].

Oh, here's another funny scene with Evan as an anchor, thanks to Bruce playing around with him and trying to make Evan lose his job. See below.

The end of the movie was good and Bruce learned his lesson about his place in life, humbled you might say. Evan kept his position as anchor and all was well. Oh, and Grace and Bruce became engaged.

Bonus points for Morgan Freeman being God. Best choice ever, in my opinion. I bet some white Anglosaxon protestants might have issues with that because "God/Jesus is white", which is never said in the Bible [though Jesus was a Jew, not an Anglosaxon white person], but whatever. If I remember the first viewing years ago with my family, my folks were not opposed to Morgan Freeman being God though he is an African American man and my folks are religious protestants.

Anyways, that's my review. More reviews to come eventually. Thanks for reading!

Movie Review: "Thor: The Dark World" 11/08/13

This is a movie review for "Thor: The Dark World", released November 8, 2013.

Trailer

Cast

Chris Hemsworth                   Thor
Natalie Portman                     Jane Foster
Tom Hiddleston                      Loki
Anthony Hopkins                   Odin
Christopher Eccleston           Malekith

Plot

About two years after meeting Thor (the Asgardian "god" of lightning), scientist Jane Foster has been searching for a way to get back in touch with him. She finds herself in a portal of sorts where items thrown into it may or may not return. Supposedly, there is an alignment of the nine realms where these portals pop up between the realms.

Jane accidentally teleports to a different realm where the Aether (a power to convert matter into dark matter) had been locked away by the Asgardians a long time ago, when the Asgardians fought against the Dark Elves [supposedly all killed]. Surprise surprise, when the Aether binds with Jane, the surviving Dark Elves emerge to search for the Aether. Since Thor brought Jane back to Asgard (only to find the Aether killing her), the Dark Elves come to Asgard to take Jane. Their intent is to gain control of the Aether, wait until the nine realms align, and cause darkness to fall over all of the realms.

Can Thor save Jane from the Aether? Can he trust his brother Loki enough to get help from him? Can Thor protect all of the realms?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

4/5 - I was glad to see Thor back with Jane and the plot (though why the hell do they risk Jane's life to make her more central to the plot?) was decent. It was good to see Chris Hemsworth back in action as Thor as well as Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

I mostly downgrade the rating because of the way they portray Jane (poor victim) and the sappy romance between the two of them. I mean, it was good to see the two back together but at the same time it was slightly nauseating. Oh, and *spoilers* it sucks that both Odin and Frigga were killed.

Not a bad movie and somewhat recommended. Seems like Loki was a fair bonus for this movie, honestly, and had the most "improvement" as a character. I personally would watch it again but it isn't in my top 10 for movies to rewatch.

That's my review. Thanks for reading! More movie reviews to come eventually.

Well, it wouldn't change but she starts wondering about why it is the same day. She finds hints about something that really changes her life. She's dead and someone from amongst the living has contacted her, a girl named Oliva. Turns out there is a serial killer in the house, having killed dozens of girls before Lisa, and he is coming after Olivia and her family. Can Lisa help protect Olivia as she is trying to get her own family to realize that they are all dead? Can they stop the killer?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.

5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

4.5/5 - This is a wonderful "after life"/ouija movie. Instead of using the board to contact the dead, Lisa (the dead one) uses one to contact the living. The idea of personal items connecting the living to the dead was interesting.

I just find the plotline of this movie to be so original and interesting that I definitely suggest this movie to fans of supernatural, ghost, and crime movies.

That's my review. Highly suggested.

Movie Review: "The Birds" 03/29/1963

This is a movie review for Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds", released March 29, 1963.

Trailer

Cast

Rod Taylor                   Mitch Brenner
Jessica Tandy               Lydia Brenner
Suzanne Pleshette      Annie Haywood
Tippi Hedren               Melanie Daniels

Plot

^ Alfred Hitchcock's intro to this film

When the young woman Melanie (from San Francisco) meets a charming man named Mitch that teases her, she tries to pull a joke on him by getting a pair of lovebirds for his sister's birthday. When she goes to drop them off, she finds out from a neighbor of his that he is from a small coastal town called Bodega Bay and went home for the weekend, she decides to deliver them herself. Melanie starts liking the area and finding herself sticking around to spend more time with Mitch. While she is there in Bodega Bay, Mrs. Brenner's chickens start acting strange and then the birds (crows etc.) start attacking the townsfolk, including a seagull attacking Melanie while she is on a skiff.

Why are the birds attacking? Can the people survive?

Rating Criteria

0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3/5 - *SPOILERS*

I heard so much about this movie being a classic to watch and, aside "Psycho", this was my top to-see movies from Alfred Hitchcock. Though in color, this movie was not what I expected. The plotline was bland though the "why are the birds attacking" plot was interesting. So a gal wanted to show one up to a guy she just met but her real intent is to flirt with him? Lame.

I thought it was interesting that one "bird expert" didn't want to believe her (being attacked personally and with the kids leaving the school) until the birds attacked the town, somehow causing an explosion at the gas station. I also found the death of the Brenner's neighbor via birds breaking in to his bedroom to be weird and awesome.

Also, to have one woman blaming Melanie for the weird bird behavior/attacks because it started after she arrived was very much like a "witch hunter" attitude. I'm glad Mitch stood up for her on that point.

The reason for the attacks and the massing of so many different species of birds was never figured out. Those that weren't attacked denied it happening until they were also attacked. The radio in the movie also said that other places were being attacked so maybe it was a wider epidemic than just Bodega Bay, but still no explanation was given for it aside "birds are just tired of humans" or something like that. Of course the movie was more about the characters trying to survive but I wanted to know why this happened.

It is a decent movie but not appropriate for younger children. The dead farmer's bird ravaged body in bed was graphic and Melanie gets brutally attacked in the Brenner's farmhouse when she found a room upstairs that had a hole in the roof. I don't blame her for going a bit berserk at the end when she sees all of the land and landscape covered in birds because the attack was traumatizing.

Watch at your own peril. You may or may not like it. I'm glad I watched it because it had been on my to-watch list for a while and I can now say "yes, I saw it" but that I didn't necessarily love it.

That's all for now! Thanks for reading. Feel free to contact me if you wish.
