FictFri inspired - "Sin" - Kida DeVela, Annaci - ch. 1

A flutter of wings fills the auditorium as three approach the podium. The elder of the three has a broad set of white feathered wings cascading from his back and wears a white robe, tied with a gold ribbon. His long hair is white and sits gently on his shoulders. He turns his light colored eyes to the audience and clears his throat.
"Brothers and sisters of the Citadel, today I present you Isaac DeEri, second son of Jacob DeEri and Felicity DeSile, and Kida DeVela, only child of Antoin DeVela and Sarah DeLuse, for their trial initiation."
"We wish you well on your journey," the audience responds in sync.
The elder turns to the two younger angels and says, "Dear Isaac and Kida, you are currently Sparrows of the Citadel. Today is your last day of being a Sparrow. You are now Tested. This trial that you will partake in the world of the sinners will help you grow and learn your place in the Citadel. The success of your purity when you return will determine what level you will be: Chosen, Wingless, or Fallen. Even if you have fallen far into sin, you may return here and redeem yourself, becoming a Fallen Angel."
The elder lifts both of his hands in the air and pulls knapsacks out for the two travelers.
Handing them the knapsacks, he says to them, "Inside of here are your maps, which will update when you have arrived at the world of the sinners. On the map will be a destination of where you need to arrive by the end of the seventh day. If you do not arrive there by the end of the seventh day, you will become a Depraved and will be unable to return in the future, whether you want to return or not."
The Trialed ones take the knapsacks and glance at each other. Both of them being born of angels, they have white colored hair and grey eyes. They had been born on the same day, a week shy of eighteen years prior, and had grown up together in the Sparrow training.
"Also inside of your knapsacks are health kits and a few snacks, in case you do not find food your first day. If you are to survive for the week on the world of the sinners, you will require the aid of those in that world. Ask for help but always be cautious. The sinners may deceive and lie to you, telling you things that are for your harm. Always search within yourself for your path for you are the only one that will looking for your purity. You may be lucky to find a Depraved amongst the sinners but you still must be wary of them."
Both of the Trialed teens had heard stories growing up about the Depraved. They were the Annaci that had fallen from grace, unable or unwilling to return to the Citadel by the end of their trial. Kida's mother Sarah warned her of the Depraved because Sarah had almost become a Depraved when she was a Trialed one. The sinners had worked against her to get to the portal and she had just made it to the portal, her trial causing her to become a Wingless. Sarah warned Kida that if she wanted to be a Chosen one like her father, that she would have to stay as far away from the sinners as she could while still relying on them. A difficult task for a Trialed teenager in a different world, but it had been done before by many Chosen Annaci. Her father was proof of that.
The elder again puts his hands in the air. He pulls out two silver handled rapiers in white sheaths.
"These are for your protection," the elder says as he hands one to each, "Healing is far greater than harming but if you must protect yourself, this is your tool. You have both been trained to use these. Remember that if you kill without reason, you will lose the chance to become a Chosen one or a Wingless one."
The boy seems to barely contain his excitement as he grasps his sword. He knows that his trial is nearing. They had seen commencements before, as tradition dictates, and after a few more words had seen the Trialed ones leave the Citadel. The girl, however, flinches a bit when she takes her sword. She knows that this tool could cause her destruction as well as giving her salvation from the evil of the sinners.
The elder holds his palms up in the air and a small pebble drops into each of his hands. He presents them to the two Trialed ones, and they each pick up theirs.
"You will encounter terrible things in the world of the sinners, but you will also encounter magnificent things. If you ever find a place or a person that you wish to check on after your return to the Citadel, give this pebble to the place or person. When the pebble is in their posession, give the pebble a kiss. Whoever holds the pebble will be able to be seen when you have returned. After your return, if you wish to visit with that place or person, you can also travel to and from the world of the sinners. If you do not return to the Citadel at the end of your trial, however, you will not be able to return ever again and will be a Depraved one."
Kida tucks the pebble into her knapsack and puts the bag on her back. She straps the sword to her belt, letting the grey fabric cover the sheathed rapier. She turns her grey eyes to the elder.
The elder turns to the audience and says as he raises his hands over Isaac and Kida's heads, "Let us now give prayers for their safe return."
In unison, the audience says, "May you travel safely in the world of the sinners. May the light shine upon you. May your path be made known. May you find love and beauty in the place of the scorched. May you return wiser for your experience."
A green door appears on the wall behind the platform. The portal to the world of the sinners, it gives off a cold temperature to the stage. Kida shivers as she turns towards the door, her back to the host of Annaci that she had grown up with and lived with for her seventeen years. Her parents are amongst the crowd, though she hadn't been able to find them since the spotlight on her had forbidden it. Isaac reaches across to her and touches her on the shoulder.
"Safe travels, Kida. You can do this. You'll be back home before you know it," he says.
She nods and says, "Yes. Safe travels to you, Isaac. May we meet again in the Citadel."
The elder walks to the green door and opens it for them. White flecks flutter through the doorway and land on the stage. The flecks disappear as soon as they hit the ground. Kida had never seen such things before and it surprises her. She reaches out a hand to catch a few but they also disappear as soon as they hit her hand.
"Oh, come on, Kida," Isaac says as he grabs her hand, "Let's do it."

FictFri Flash Fiction 4/22 - "Grow"

My life started out when my father and mother pollinated. Of course, my father wasn't even in my mother's patch so I never got to know him. I was ready to grow next to my mother but a gust of wind brushed by and carried me away. I was never to see my mother again, for her short life was ending soon.
I flew for centuries, or so it seemed to this little seed. Miles away from my mother, I fell to the ground. The impact knocked me out. When I came to, I found myself underground. I heard dull voices nearby. The voices were unlike my mother's voice but they were life nonetheless.
One voice next to me whispered something, "Grow."
I was afraid of the risk of growing, because I didn't know if I wanted to become a flower like my mother. The soil around me supported me. Why would I want to leave the ground?
The liquid came from above and soaked me. I felt cold and realized that there was warmth above. If I grew, I could meet this warmth. Faced with the choice of staying in the cold ground or growing to the warmth, I figured it would be best to at least try to grow.
Soon I approached the surface of the ground, a tender green sprout. I fought with all of my strength to dig through the soil around me. I wanted out. I wanted to stand above the ground, to show the world what I had to offer.
The light blinded me when I broke through the soil but it felt wonderful. The warmth that I had been searching for was given to me and it was exhilarating. I stretched in the sunlight, reaching my leaves towards the sky, and felt a wave of joy bubble up through me. When it finally reached my top, it opened me to a new level of existence as a flower appeared on top of me. The beautiful yellow petals spread above me as a declaration to the world that I had survived so many trials and had earned the honor of blooming. Though my life would be short, just like those like me and those around me, I knew that I could hold my head high and enjoy the sun while I was still alive. I was a daisy and was glad that I had taken the risk of growing.
I saw some seeds fall near me and I told them, waving my green leaves in the air, a good bit of advice I had received, "Grow."

FictFri Flash tale - "Monster" 4-15-16

At the end of the hall next to the last door, there is a picture frame. The frame has not had a picture in it for years but it still sits there as a reminder of what happened. The rusty nail that holds it barely stays in the wall but does not even attempt to keep the frame squared to the ceiling. The frame slants into the wall at a haphazard angle, its bottom corner ripped in bits as the golden fabric covering sways in the still air.

Years ago, it had been mounted properly, set in perfect condition, and had shown a picture of the young Miss Valentine and her suitor Master Terrance Holt. Master and Mistress Vanderbilt were proud of her engagement to the young Master Holt. It was a match made in heaven, everyone said. Everyone that mattered was to attend for the joyous occasion.

The wedding night approached and we prepared the whole household for the event. I made sure that everything was running smoothly with our service to the Vanderbilt family, from making sure that the hors d'oeuvres were ready, to examining the valets to ensure their proper appearance, to last minute touches on the garden. The guests arrived on time and congratulated the family as we served them. Champagne glasses bubbling with white liquid, exotic cigars, and expensive delights were passed around the rooms on silver plates as the suited men and flowing gowned women chatted about the occasion. Master Vanderbilt gathered everyone's attention and asked for the whole group to congregate in the ballroom for the ceremony.

As the numerous amounts of guests chuckled their way towards the ballroom, a scream was heard in the mansion. I maneuvered through the crowd to find out what was going on, telling Master Vanderbilt that I would take care of it. The guards were already trying to secure the guests and locate the disturbance. A second scream came from the family's habitation wing of the mansion and Master Vanderbilt, a few guards, and I hurried up the stairs to find what was happening. We never made it to the top of the stairs.

A creature barreled down the staircase, slashing with magnificent claws at anything that got in its way. I collapsed against the stairs, gazing at the creature which was headed straight for the guests. It was larger than a man but in a tattered white flowing outfit.

Pressing a hand to my throat to try stopping the pounding sensation, I checked on Master Vanderbilt and those near me. All were dead. Their blood soaked their white tuxedo shirts and spilled onto the staircase. I had to find out what kind of monster would do such a thing on a day that should have been a celebration, so I stumbled down the stairs. The stairs warped under my feet and sometimes threatened to swallow me whole, but I had to warn the others. I had to get some out alive.

The world rumbled around me, pulsing a weakening beat with every step I took. Death had come to the mansion, bringing many to the ground in pools of blood. The maids would never get all the red out, I knew. Seeing Mistress Vanderbilt in her lovely blue dress that was ruined with a red gash across her chest, I also knew that the Vanderbilts wouldn't worry about the stain in floor. They couldn't because they were dead.

As the world started to fade around me, I managed to make it to the ballroom door. At the front of the aisle of strewn carcasses stood the monster in the dress that Miss Valentine was to wear. In its arms was the lifeless body of poor Master Holt, his chest ripped open. The creature reached into the dead man's chest and pulled out his heart. I might have been imagining things but I saw tears streaming from the monster's eyes as it devoured the heart.

The world turned black as I left my body behind, the last witness of the creature's massacre. She keeps herself locked in the mansion and none have dared to approach since. She took the photo out of the frame because, one of her first actions as a monster, she had ripped it apart in her passion. She didn't want to become a monster but when she did, she didn't want to remember being a human even if that did mean that she had to cut down all that reminded her of the time that she was Miss Valentine Vanderbilt.

Movie Review - "Airport" 03/05/70

This is a movie review for "Airport" released 03/05/1970. I watched this on a VHS tape that we bought at Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in ND.

Trailer:

Cast:
Burt Lancaster  ("Atlantic City" Lou, "The Leopard" Prince Don Fabrizio Salina) - Mel Bakersfeld
Dean Martin (Host of "The Dean Martin Show" (261 episodes, 1965-1974), "Ocean's 11" (1960) Sam Harmon) - Vernon Demerest
Jean Seberg ("Paint Your Wagon" Elizabeth, "The Mouse That Roared" Helen Kokintz) - Tanya Livingston
Jacqueline Bisset ("The Deep" Gail Berke, "Murder on the Orient Express" Countess Andrenyi) - Gwen Meighen
George Kennedy ("Cool Hand Luke" Dragline, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" Ed Hocken) - Patroni
Helen Hayes ("Herbie Rides Again" Mrs. Steinmetz, "Anastasia" (1956) Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna) -  Ada Quonsett
Van Heflin ("3:10 to Yuma" Dan Evans, "Shane" Joe Starrett) - D.O. Guerrero
Maureen Stapleton ("The Money Pit" Estelle, "Cocoon" Mary Luckett) -    Inez Guerrero

Plot:
The whole movie revolves around an airport "Lincoln Airport". There are many plotlines but the main ones are: a stowaway elderly woman (who is really sly to get on board the planes), a deranged unemployed destitute man (who has a bomb and is trying to fix his problems that the airline "caused"), an airport manager and his falling-apart marriage, a pilot and his affair with a {pregnant} stewardess. Add a snowstorm and a plane stuck off the tarmac to the mix and it is a very interesting movie, in my opinion.

Criteria:
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around – characters, music, theme, storyline, etc.

4.5/5 - For those that are into newer movies, stay away. This is an older movie and it takes a while for it to get really interesting.
However, if you are more into older movies and real plot developments, definitely check this movie out. There are so many levels of plot that it kept me focused on the movie but of course it really got intense when they realized that the man with the bomb (Guerrero) was on the plane. The different sub-plots in this movie come together and resolve themselves when the bomb is found out, so it is worthwhile to watch the whole movie.

Afraid of terrorists and bombs on a public transportation? Don't watch this or man up before you do. :-P

Movie Review - "Breathe" 08/08/11

This is a movie review for "Breathe" released 08/08/2011. I watched this on Netflix, February 7, 2016.

Trailer:

Cast:
Clyde Jones ("Coming to America" Soul Glo Man, "13 Sins" Gerry) -  Mr. Winn
Ken Kushner ("Murderland" Teddy, "The Psychotics" (TV Series) Ben Kaiser) - Dr. Whitworth
Jazsmin Lewis ("Deliver Us from Eva" Lori, "Barbershop" Jennifer Palmer) - Angela Logan
Samson Logan  ("Love Overboard" (Video) Captain, "Whatever She Wants" (Video) Tyrese, also Executive Producer of "Breathe" and husband of Angela Burgin-Logan [IRL]) - Samson Logan

Plot:
A woman and a man fall in love, commit to each other, and start a new life together. They even buy a house. When she becomes pregnant, everything seems perfect. However, she started having complications in her pregnancy - preeclampsia.

Based on a true story, this woman (Angela) tries telling her doctor that the symptoms are not right and that there is something wrong with her pregnancy. However, the doctor says that since this is her first time being pregnant that all of her symptoms are normal and the "wrongness" is all in her head, even when her skin starts splitting and bleeding.

4.5/5 - I think this is an amazing movie. I was crying most of the time, especially when Angela's gut feeling was right compared to the doctor. I have been in a situation where my gut feeling was right and the doctors said that I was fine, so I know this frustration. While watching this movie, I wanted to throw stuff at my computer because of the stupid doctors (but I didn't).
For all those that are thinking of getting pregnant, please advise. Preeclampsia is a real thing, though it is a "silent killer" and very few talk about it. Worse than miscarriages, this killer can kill the mother as well as the child and it hides in the regular pregnancy symptoms [it takes a lot to identify it].

DO watch, especially to see the issue from the woman's perspective!

Movie Review - "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie" 05/04/90

Movie review for "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie", released May 04, 1990. Viewed on Netflix.

Trailer:

Plot:
A kid, trapped in a lady's kitchen and given books to entertain himself as she prepares to make supper, tells her four stories from one of her favorite books. Each story is more horrific than the last.

5/5 - I cannot give you more information about this movie because it is a comglomerate of 4 stories. The ending kinda disappointed me but was interesting, in my opinion. If you want to watch this, remember that this is a "Tales from the Darkside" movie - it is not all fun and games. There are deaths and gruesome things. If you're into that kind of stuff, check it out. Pretty wicked. ;-)

Movie Review - "Brigadoon" (tv movie 1966)

This is a movie review for "Brigadoon", the tv movie from 1966. I could not find the trailer for this movie since this is so old (and the 1954 trailer kept getting in the way).
I watched it on YouTube here.

Cast:
Robert Goulet ("Beetlejuice" Maxie Dean, "Scrooged" Preston Rhinelander) - Tommy Albright
Peter Falk ("The Princess Bride" Grandfather/Narrator, tv show "Columbo" Columbo) - Jeff Douglas
Sally Ann Howes ("Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968) Truly Scrumptious, "Dead of Night" (1945) Sally O'Hara) - Fiona McLaren
Finlay Currie ("Ben-Hur" (1959) Balthasar / Narrator, "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1956) Andrew Stuart) -  Mr.Lundie
Marlyn Mason  ("Fifteen and Pregnant" (TV Movie 1998) Grandma Spangler, "Wonder Woman" (TV Series 1979) Lucy DeWitt in episode 'The Richest Man in the World')  - Meg Brockie

Plot *SPOILERS*:
A vanishing town in Scotland appears when two American boys are lost. The town will stay in sync with the rest of the world for 24 hours before disappearing again. One boy, Tommy, falls in love with a Brigadoon girl named Fiona but can Tommy leave the modern world to be with Fiona?

4/5 for this movie, in my opinion. Though it is 50 years old, the movie is very good. I have seen the play before and I still like it, no matter who is playing the roles or the media of the movie/play. I love the plot and how it plays out.

If you have issues with Scottish accents, this is NOT the movie for you. It took me a while to figure out what they were saying. O.o But it is worth it!

I find it interesting that three of the actors/actresses that I mentioned in the cast were part of movies that I have seen and love. It is amazing to find out that someone in an 80s/90s movie was acting back in the 60s!
