Movie Review - "The X-Files" 06/19/98

This is a movie review for "The X-Files", released June 19, 1998. I watched this on a VHS tape that I previously bought.

Trailer:

Cast:
David Duchovny ("Zoolander" (2001) J.P. Prewitt, "The X-Files" (TV Series, 1993-2016) Agent Fox Mulder)        -      Agent Fox Mulder
Gillian Anderson ("Princess Mononoke" (1997) Moro (English version, voice), "The X-Files" (TV series, 1993-2016) Agent Dana Scully)  -        Agent Dana Scully

Plot:
There are cases that not even the FBI can figure out. They are put away, hidden and unknown. Some of them are merely unexplained. Others are shuffled under the rug by the government and those of higher power. All of these cases are the X-Files.

The two that work on these cases are FBI Agent Fox "Spooky" Mulder {a staunch believer in the unexplained and the extraterrestrial} and FBI Agent Dana Scully {a "feet firmly placed on the ground" doctor who decided to become FBI}. The FBI paired Scully up with Mulder to keep an eye on him and to take notes, per the TV series of The X-Files. In this movie, another unexplained case has occurred. Are aliens invading Earth? Are there people who want to facilitate the re-colonization of the Earth, infecting humans with alien DNA?

Mulder and Scully are on the case as they dig into this X-File, for the sake of all humans on Earth.

Criteria:
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around – characters, music, theme, storyline, etc.

3.5/5 - This was an interesting movie to view. I had not seen the episodes for many years prior to this so I forgot what the X-Files show was about. However, it did not make the movie less enjoyable. Yes, there were parts that were completely over my head (because it was in connection with what they had discussed prior in the TV series) but it was not a bad stand-alone movie. The movie was not 100% dependent on the show, which helped, and all the information that was needed to understand the movie was in the movie.

That being said, I started to watch the TV series after watching this movie and knowing some about the series made the movie make more sense. "Oh, that's what they meant when they said (....)." Did the movie help intrigue us into watching the show? Definitely! I would never have been able to get my mister to watch the show if we hadn't watched the movie beforehand, even with the small items that were addressed in the movie that the show had brought up.

If you do not like movies that ride on the tails of a show, do not watch this movie [even though it was a decent stand-alone movie].

If you did not like the X-Files show, don't watch this movie. It had the same feel as the episodes; it was like a lengthened episode.

If you don't like aliens, science fiction, conspiracy theories, and stuff along those lines, again: don't watch this movie.

If you do like any of the three mentioned points above, go for it! Just remember that it is based on the TV series and that there are a few (minor) things that the movie doesn't cover in detail because there had been a previous conversation about it in the show {Mulder's sister's abduction, for one}.

Since I hadn't watched many of the episodes prior to watching this movie, I knock it down to a 3.5/5. It kept the attention and was interesting but definitely made me question more about the TV series. Since it brought us to watching the X-Files show, I bump it up to a 3.5 (instead of a 3/5) because of the intrigue. Having watched some of the episodes, I say it did a good job keeping to the feel of the X-Files show but it wasn't as interesting as the show [in my opinion]. :-/  Compared to some movies that are based on shows (like the movie Stargate Ark of Truth and the show Stargate SG-1), "The X-Files" movie was less interesting and didn't stand up as well by itself, in my opinion.

Do I recommend this? Yes. However, it may behoove you to watch a few episodes prior to watching the movie?
