Movie Review: "Krampus: The Christmas Devil" 2013

This is a movie review for "Krampus", released in 2013. I watched this on December 25, 2019 via Tubi.

I could not find the real release date of this movie because IMDB had no information about this movie until about 2017, though it says that it was released in 2013. I ended up finding the Facebook page of "Krampus: The Christmas Devil" and scrolled all the way back to 2013 where they were talking about the movie being released. Actual date? Not sure... So I'll leave it at 2013.

Genre: Action, Horror, Thriller
Run Time: 1 Hour and 22 Minutes

Official MPAA Rating (According to IMDB.com):
G / General Audiences
PG / Parental Guidance Suggested
PG-13 / Parents Strongly Cautioned
R / Restricted
X
Not Rated
IMDB.com does not have a rating posted for this movie, for some reason. I would guess R/Restricted.

Trailer

I had a hard time finding this trailer... Most of the YouTube videos were for other Krampus movies.

Notable Cast

Samantha Hoepfl ... Heather Duffin
A.J. Leslie ... Jeremy Duffin
Erica Soto ... Rebecca Duffin

Plot

Naughty or nice - Santa Claus determines how the children have done throughout the year. If they aren't good enough, Krampus (Santa Claus' brother) kidnaps them, throws them in a burlap sack, and beats them up. Most of the time, the kids never return.

Jeremy was one of these children back when he was a kid. He managed to escape but has been piecing together a case against the yearly kidnapper. Can he stop the kidnapper before more children disappear?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

1.5/5 - Very low quality movie. Not a very good timeline and it doesn't really dig into the Krampus legend except "whoah, kids are going missing on Christmas Eve". Nothing really stands out as amazing or super interesting. I would bypass this movie, if I were you. I have heard the other Krampus movies are MUCH better but that's sometimes what you get when you watch a low budget movie.

I was disappointed in this movie. Waste of viewing time, honestly, in my opinion. If they had dug more into the legend or gave it deeper plot meaning, then this might be something to suggest but nope.

According to IMDB, this movie is so pathetic that the rating is at a 1.6/10 with 1,593 ratings. Like wow.... Bypass it unless you dare to watch this pathetic movie. There are SO many more horror movies that are better than this, even in the B movie category.

Anyways, that's my movie review. Thanks for reading! More reviews to come eventually.

4.5/5 - I kinda would have liked a note at the beginning saying it was based on a real story but whatever. It is a good movie. Sometimes it was difficult to hear the dialogue but no other complaints.

Sorry that this movie review is short but it wasn't a very memorable movie and I didn't have much to say about it right after watching it. I think we watched it in black and white, but I am not sure. Either way, it was an interesting escape movie and very ingenious how they covered up their escape (though research afterwards tells me that they might have bribed some guards to "look the other way" regarding things and might have gotten word out to someone on the outside to pick them up from the bay area). The final word on what happened to the prisoners is vague but they were never picked up afterwards and they did not wash up on any shore so they definitely at least got out of Alcatraz. Inescapable? Yeah right.... Good story and fairly good movie. I would suggest it, though it was a bit slow to start off with.

*NOT FOR KIDS*
This is bland, to say the least. If the point is to say that some people's lives are pretty mundane, then they have made their point clear. The movie is not much to talk about. Seems like if you're stoned or high, it would be more interesting...

The most interesting part of the movie:

Love it if you want but I don't. Bland but not super bad. It does have some value, whatever that is...

3.5/5 - *SPOILERS*
NOT FOR CHILDREN. Tess is raped in this movie and it is VIOLENT and gory. She is left for dead afterwards. I was sickened by this movie because it is so realistic. I was honestly wanting to turn this movie off but my roommate (this hit closer to home for her) was still interested in watching it. For a Stephen King movie, this is the worst I have seen.

She seems to lose her mind during the movie, talking to her fictional book characters. In the end, her character supported her to do what she did to get revenge. Is it the way that she should have gone about dealing with this? I don't know but it was very difficult to watch.

I would not be interested in watching this movie again in the future, even though it is a Stephen King movie. I don't know if I would even read the tale if there is a novelette version of it...

5/5 - This is a wonderful documentary about what happened after the Titanic crashed. They focus on how to catalog the victims, trying to bring back as many as they could, and giving a formal farewell to those that they could not bring back. They created a style of cataloging the victims so that their belongings would be matched to them by a number system. This has helped with larger mass death situations, which helps forensic science and crime investigation. I enjoyed being able to view this because it was more factual than the DiCaprio Titanic movie and I find the Titanic incident interesting, though tragic.

If you are into documentaries and interested in the Titanic, I HIGHLY recommend this.

Plot

Jack Traven and his partner Harry deal with a lot of stuff on the Los Angeles police force. On one call, they have to deal with the fact that there are many people stuck in an elevator but it turns out to be a hostage situation and bombs are attached to the elevator (to hurtle them down to their death). When they foil the hostage situation and save the hostages, the man responsible for the situation gives Jack a test. There's a bus filled with commuters. Once the bus gets up to 50 MPH, a bomb will be activated. If it gets lower than 50 MPH, it will be set off. How can Jack save the passengers? How can he catch the culprit?

5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

2.5/5 - *SPOILERS*

The logic/physics of the movie seemed off (keeping a bus that old running / not breaking down, what about the fuel for this bus?!, jumping the bus over a HUGE gap in the freeway, crashing the train, etc.). Why didn't the dye go off when she moved the movie? And the fact that Jack could have broken Annie's wrist to get her off of the train, but he decided to take the hard way to get them safe... Seriously, how did they survive the crash?

Bus jump, illogical to me:

Honestly, aside the whole physics and logic aspect of this movie, they tried to create a romantic connection between Jack and Annie, which didn't really work for me. Sure, they survived the bus but does that mean that they have to get all lovey-dovey? Why doesn't Jack just go "yeah, I saved you. It's my job." and walk away to go be a cop somewhere else.....?

Train crash and "define the relationship" moment for Jack and Annie:

I would not be suggesting this movie to others but if a thriller/action movie that is slow and monotonous is your thing, go for it. I reluctantly keep this video in my library and would not be interested in watching this again, personally. [Reeves, Bullock and Daniels have all played better parts in other movies!]

An Ivy League professor named Bill Kincaid, in trouble for some female student supposedly getting fresh with him, hears that his twin brother Brady Kincaid has been killed. He decides, with much regret, to go down to small-town Oklahoma to pay his regards. One problem: his brother isn't dead. No, his brother wants to pull a twin stunt so that Brady can have an alibi if something goes wrong with a marijuana business deal... How will this work out? Will they be able to pull off this stunt or will things go wrong...?

2/5 - *SPOILERS*

This marijuana growing set up is the best thing of this whole movie. Talk about smarts, though it got him in trouble..

Honestly, this movie was pathetic, even for a crime movie. It kept the attention but it was very lack luster.  I won't go into details but the movie trudged along and kept exploring the dark side of the drug world. What could go wrong did go wrong. A dude was murdered because he wanted his money that he had loaned to Brady (the OK brother, not the professor). They tried to pin it on the neo-nazis but messed up the swastika sign... Just was not a good movie.

It was ironic that Bill got shot by a crossbow after Brady was "killed by a crossbow", which brought Bill down to the area in the first place.

There was so much not finished in the end. Like what happened to Bill's job on the east coast and the issue with the co ed? Why the hell did Ken the orthodontist go ape shit and try to bring Bill and Brady in for the death of Pug? What happened to Ken's family, considering Ken died?

This is a movie to pass on, in my personal opinion. I am glad I didn't spend premium dollars on this DVD or I would have been much more disappointed. [The more I thought about this movie during the review, the lower the rating went. I started at 3/5 right after we watched it, down to 2.5 and stopping at 2/5.]

Plot

Since they are unable to afford their previous house, Ellison Oswalt's family moves. As they are moving in, the Sheriff warns him that this house's previous owners were murdered and to be careful. Ellison finds some old film movies up in the attic and realizes, watching them, that they seem to be about the people that had lived in the house previously and potentially a few other families over the years. As he digs in deeper, he finds that the other families had also been killed/murdered. Is there a connection between all of them? Is there a common killer? Is the killer still around, that he has to worry about his family's sake, or is the killing streak done? Things get creepier and the whole family starts feeling the affects of something almost sinister in their midst. What can the family do? Can they survive?

5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

2.5/5 - *SPOILERS*
Terrible suspense music and jump scares. The plot line was kinda bland because the character was researching, not getting barely anywhere with the research, reached out to a deputy and a professor but still really didn't get anywhere with his research. The deputy put the connections together at the end though the writer had mentioned the address connection previously (WHY did the writer not see the connection?!). The fact that the kids were the killers was a bit "Children of the Corn" reminiscent. They should have gone more into detail about the "stealer of children's souls" thing. I did not expect the daughter to do it, considering the boy's night terrors, which is one thing that the movie succeeded with but that's not much.

In my personal opinion, I did not enjoy this movie. The story line was not "organic" moving through the story. The music was absolutely terrible and the jump scares were built up in a "watch out for the jump scare" way, which made it pathetic. I personally will not volunteer to watch this movie again and I do not recommend it, but it might your thing so feel free to ignore my view and watch it (but don't say I didn't warn you).

Anyways, that's my movie review. Thanks for reading. More reviews to come eventually.

5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

4/5 - *SPOILERS*
VERY good music; I have the soundtrack because it is just so catching.

Barnum should have brought his family (or at least wife) on the trip with him for Lind's tour. It would have saved him a lot of problems with Lind falling for him.

I thought that the bartender being cool with people dancing while drinking was weird but that's a cool bartender.

I was happy to see Philip saved money so to offer it up to fix the issue of no place. Philip and Anna were a cute couple and I am so glad they connected. I am surprised that the one daughter decided to go for ballet instead of the circus.

If you don't like musicals, don't watch this movie because music is a huge thing for this movie. (But Hugh Jackman has such a great singing voice. <3 And Zac Efron still does too! )

The main thing that bothered me about the movie was the fact that Barnum decided to go off alone with a single woman for her to be on tour (since he was funding her tour), leaving his wife and children at home and the circus to be run by Philip [which was also like leaving behind his 2nd family].  I mean, wouldn't you even suspect that Lind could potentially get feelings for you being in such close contact for all of that time? Have your family, or at least your wife, there so that Lind doesn't get thoughts about getting together with you, seriously.... "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" kind of thought that maybe they could get together while on the road and the wife didn't have to know about it or she could take him as hers, making him leave his wife and children. Either way, I was not pleased with Lind and the bad chances he gave her for trying to seduce him and have an affair.

Aside that, the movie is a good movie. The circus family really does bond together during the whole movie, as seen with the pain they feel when Barnum goes on the tour with Lind and prefers her over them. It also is seen when Barnum tries to make sure that everyone gets out of the burning building, even Philip. At the end, they all do come together to be the circus family that they were building and, with Philip's help from his 10% earnings, they decide to get a tent for the circus and potentially travel (this is to have less base costs and to keep safe from all the crap that people have against the "weird" circus folk).

I don't know what the real story is behind Barnum and how the first circus came to be but this is supposedly a biography. If this is really what he had to deal with, then the movie was a good representation of it. However, since I am not sure of the real story, I can at least say that this movie was a very enjoyable bit of time. I definitely recommend this for others to watch (but there is drinking, potential affair, violence, etc so if you're super sensitive, you might not want to watch). I definitely will be keeping this in my library and will be watching it multiple times again in the future.

That's my movie review. Thanks for reading! More reviews to come eventually.

4.5/5 -  *SPOILERS*
Very good movie about music and trying to reunite with family. I downgraded the movie for missing parts about Wizard's background (and his jerk/abusive/controlling side), no clear ending for the kid at the home for boys nor Arthur, and no epilogue to say what happens with August and his parents. Wonderful pro-music movie with lovely music.

Here's Evan (aka "August Rush") and Louis playing guitars together in the park before they even knew they were related.

August's Rhapsody was wonderful and made me cry, but I had to watch it twice in a row.  See August's Rhapsody here:

I did have an issue with the fact that no one else in the crowd was looking around and whatnot except his parents.... I mean, reality check please? That many people, you'd think at least a few people would be looking around as they listen.

If you like music, this is an amazing tale. If you like the idea of hope to reunite families, this is an amazing tale. I HIGHLY recommend this movie to anyone: kid, adult, or elderly. I would definitely keep this in my library, though this is in my roommate's collection.

4/5 - Cute short video from the Trailer Park Boys before they came out with the series. I don't like how they used the name "Mr. Lahey" for GW's boss and for the park supervisor, with the same actor. I am okay with the fact that both Rob and JP both had different characters for the TPB series, though this short was not in the same world that the series is in. It can be confusing, but that's how it goes.

If you like Trailer Park Boys, feel free to watch this but don't get confused with the TPB world and this movie. (Bonus for the fact that it is only 30 minutes long!)

So that's my movie review. Thanks for reading! More reviews to come eventually.

Movie Review: "Cannibal: The Musical" 10/1993

This is a movie review for "Cannibal: The Musical", originally premiered in October 1993 in Boulder, Colorado then released August 30, 1996. I watched this on November 6, 2019.

Genre: Comedy, Musical, Thriller
Run Time: 1 Hour and 35 Minutes

Official MPAA Rating (According to IMDB.com):
G / General Audiences
PG / Parental Guidance Suggested
PG-13 / Parents Strongly Cautioned
R / Restricted
X
Not Rated

Trailer

Notable Cast

Trey Parker ... Alferd Packer (as Juan Schwartz)
Toddy Walters ... Polly Pry

Jon Hegel ... Isreal Swan
Dian Bachar ... George Noon
Jason McHugh ... Frank Miller
Matt Stone ... James Humphrey / Woman Sitting (segment "Hang the Bastard") (as Mathew Stone)
Ian Hardin ... Shannon Bell

Plot

Back in 1873, a group of miners decided to go from Utah into Colorado to try to get lucky in gold mining. However, they got lost on their way to their destination. This movie is a telling of a known cannibalism case in the United States, though not the first. How did Alferd Packer end up eating his companions? Why would they resort to cannibalism? And what would be the fate of Alferd Packer?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

2.5/5 - *SPOILERS*

This is actually a comedic retelling of a true story. Alferd Packer actually was a solo survivor of an incident of cannibalism.  This movie was interesting, at first, but it deteriorated as it progressed [went boring around midway through the movie]. True, the cannibalism thing really did sour the mood but the crappy jokes (Asian "Indians"?) became unbearable. The song "Shpadoinkle Day" was a highlight of this movie at first but then Alferd became obsessed about finding his horse, over caring about being well prepared for the journey from Utah to Colorado.

Shpadoinkle Day

The songs get worse as the movie progresses, with the final song being "Hang the Bastard". Some might find this song funny but I just sat there going "wow.... seriously.".

Oh, by the way, according to the movie, Alferd did not get hung because he committed the crimes before the state was created into a state. "Cannot legally be tried under state law", supposedly.

According to Wikipedia, he had escaped when his testimony was questioned, hid from the law for 9 years, and got a retrial. He got 40 years for voluntary manslaughter.

Anyways, as a movie, this is funny to see as a South Park fan but didn't have much aside that. I would have rather watched a documentary about this instead of this, in hindsight. It was good to see Trey Parker and Matt Stone's creativeness pre-South Park but still was lame. The movie dragged along and the "love interest" story between Alferd and the reporter Pry was the worst ever, right behind the "always getting super lost" idea for worst story. I don't know the details on the real story and, though I love musicals (which gave this a little bit of a boost for the rating), this movie did not give good enough entertainment for a stand-alone movie. "Waste of time" was one thought when I finished though I still give kudos to Parker and Stone for making this. You can really see South Park's foundation in this movie but...

That's my movie review. Thanks for reading (sorry for the disappointment). More reviews to come eventually!

Is there a way to handle this case? Can she have enough faith to deal with this, especially after her husband had recently passed? What will happen?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.

5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

2.5/5 - *SPOILERS*
I honestly did not like this movie. It was too faith-based for my taste. The religion just dripped from the screen like "The Ring"'s character dripped water out of the screen... It made me sick watching it but I was told it was a good movie so I continued watching it.

The concept (cursing a lying preacher to shelter lost souls within his own body after his own was stolen from him) was interesting but also very unrealistic. Let's throw in voodoo to explain it! Seriously...  But accumulating souls/personalities is a weird proposition but it is explained with the mountain witch curse. How this works with other people with multiple personalities? It doesn't but it makes a movie plot line, however bad it is.

The exorcist type thrashing as he changes between souls/personalities was weird and messed up. It could have been explained more as to why he does that, but that was not explained. We just partially witness it a few times and go along with it. Honestly, I would have like a half-ass explanation as to WHY he thrashes like that as he switches. Is it just because they are individualistic trapped souls inside of the shelter/body, and not just multiple personalities that one human has?

Sammy coming back with David's song was almost expected (she was being absorbed, duh!) but does she have all of the 5 other souls that he had within her? We don't hear about it because the movie ends abruptly, though even her mom goes "wait... I thought I saved you but.....".

In my personal opinion, I would not recommend this movie nor would I watch it again. It just isn't worth it. True, Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers did good work in this movie but that's what keeps the rating of this movie above a 2/5. If they weren't as good in acting or if they had other actors, the enjoyment of this movie probably would have spiked downwards as this was a hair's breadth away from being considered a "B movie".

Anyways, this movie review is done and thank goodness for that. I was getting sick to my stomach seeing it on the "To Review" list...

Thanks for reading! More reviews are to come eventually, so keep an eye out for them.

Movie Review: "Allegiant" 03/18/16

This is a movie review for "Allegiant", released March 18, 2016. I watched this October 25, 2019 via DVD.

Genre: Action, Adventure, Mystery
Run Time: 2 Hours

Trailer

Notable Cast

Shailene Woodley ... Tris
Theo James ... Four
Naomi Watts ... Evelyn
Octavia Spencer ... Johanna
Jeff Daniels ... David
Zoƫ Kravitz ... Christina
Ansel Elgort ... Caleb
Miles Teller ... Peter

Plot

In a world split into five factions (Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity, and Candor) based on what virtue your heart leans towards, there are people called Divergents - those that are strong in more than one virtue and could easily live amongst that faction. Tris is one of these, as we had previously learned in the first movie "Divergent".

The third movie of the Divergent series, Tris and her group have seen Divergents being hunted down (movie 1 "Divergent") and searched for to open an ancient box (movie 2 "Insurgent"). Now that the box is opened, what is in store for the Divergents and those of the city of Chicago, which is where the story of the Divergent series has been told? What is beyond the walls?

As Tris and her group go beyond the wall, the question is whether there actually is life beyond. What is humanity like? How will those from Chicago interact with the others? Is there hope for humanity? What can Chicago people (Tris and her friends) teach others?

3.5/5 - *SPOILERS*

Recap from "Insurgent" - the message from the box:

In my personal opinion, the plot line of this movie was much better than Divergent and Insurgent. It was good to finally see the outside world, though it was very messed up. They had all of this technology but they are worried about if someone has "perfect genes"? Seriously? Like, let's be "if you don't have the perfect genes, you can't go do this that or the other thing" [reminiscent of "if you're black, you can't come into this white establishment" or "if you're female, you can't get this job"]. It goes to prove that advanced technology doesn't mean advanced humanity.

With brain washing, kidnapping, murdering, destroying the life in the wasteland (poisoned, scorched), and being gene-cist, humanity has failed but they think that they are "so that". They have been watching what happens in Chicago (especially Tris, for some reason...) and think that this will help them continue on with being gene-cist. I mean, for all that we (and they) have seen with the first two movies, why do they think that she will suddenly take all of the fame/popularity, turn her back on her friends, and go along with what the outside world says? And all of this experiment (Chicago with the factions) for profit... SERIOUSLY, do you think that the people that have gone through the experiment are just mice to be played with?! No wonder they stand up at the end and are like "NO!".

For plot, this movie was definitely the best of the three (in my opinion!) because it felt more realistic and dives into more of the post-apocalyptic world outside of the walls of Chicago. I hear that there should be a fourth one (since Allegiant is technically half of the book?) but as of 5/10/2020, over 4 years after Allegiant was released, it has not happened. "Ascendant", the 4th movie of the series, was to be released in 2017 but was canceled. According to Internet sources, Allegiant did not make as much as they hoped to in the theaters so there was to be a TV movie and then continue on the story via a TV series. One site (screenrant.com) said that:
"While development on the TV series was still ongoing in 2017, it was eventually confirmed in 2018 that lack of interest from the original cast killed The Divergent Series: Ascendant.
While The Divergent Series: Ascendant would have provided closure to the story, making it a TV movie would have been an acknowledgment the series had failed on the big screen. Cast members like Teller and Kravitz were already moving on to bigger roles and projects, so the odds of convincing them to return were always slim. It’s a shame for fans of the franchise that it didn’t get a proper conclusion, and proves The Divergent Series: Allegiant shouldn’t have split the final book in two."

In general, I think that the series was a decent tale. It isn't high on my list of "great trilogies" like Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, or the old Star Wars movies (IV-VI), but the story behind the movies gives this trilogy an a-okay to watch for entertainment. Mind you, I have not read the books so they probably are terrible compared to the books (like parts of LotR are terrible compared to the books) but as someone that hasn't read them, I don't mind them. They're not in my library as the trilogy is owned by my roommate but I am not opposed to having them around.

As with almost every movie out there, there were bad things and parts that could have been improved upon. Character development, relationship development, and the general "savior complex" issue in the second movie are some of the faults I mentioned/noticed in this series.

As this was set up to be directed towards teens, I think this would honestly be a decent thing to watch with teens as Tris is trying to figure out who she is, how to fight her inner demons, and how to help/save everyone. The "savior complex" issue was not necessary but I guess it might speak volumes to some people...

Well, that's my movie review. Thanks for reading! Keep an eye out for more reviews in the future.
