Plot

In a world split into five factions (Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity, and Candor) based on what virtue your heart leans towards, there are people called Divergents - those that are strong in more than one virtue and could easily live amongst that faction. Tris is one of these, as we had previously learned in the first movie "Divergent".

In this movie, second of a trilogy, the leader of the Erudites (Jeanine) is trying to find the strongest Divergent to unlock a secret ancient box because, ironically after all this time of trying to kill them all off, only a Divergent can open the box. Tris and her friends are trying their best to stay out of Jeanine's reach and figure out a way to save everyone and keep the world from being drawn into a war. Will they survive? What is in the box? Who can/will open it?

Rating Criteria
0/5 – No value whatsoever. Absolute waste of time.
1/5 – Barely worth any time.
2/5 – Pathetic but has a bit of something to hold the attention a little.
3/5 – Somewhat kept the attention but could definitely have used more.
4/5 – Good, but not awe-strikingly amazing. Could have maybe used a bit more to the movie.
5/5 – Go see it! Wonderful movie all around. – characters, music, theme, story line, etc.

3.5/5 - *SPOILERS*
It was nice to see more of the world but the plot line was a bit too simple to me (could see through some of the characters too easily, especially Caleb and Peter). Caleb's betrayal was not expected but was kinda also foreseen. Christina returning to be loyal to Tris was not expected but very welcome, especially after Tris admitted shooting Will in the first movie. The box needing to be opened by a divergent was very much easy to predict, especially since all of society was trying to eliminate divergents last movie.

Honestly, the fact that Tris and group were running all movie and then Tris needed to be the one to open the box made the movie reminiscent of the Matrix - the main character will be the savior O.o. Why did it have to be Tris, and why was Jeanine surprised that it would be Jeanine to open the box? I guess it was because Tris is the main character. It would have been a little more interesting if it had been someone else to open up the box, but then why wouldn't that character be the main character of the movie?

I did rate this up around 3.5 because of the ability to see more of the world, though it was merely to run and hide from Jeanine's persecutions against them. It was very interesting to see the difference between the factions' areas (Amity and Candor especially). Being able to see the other factions also gave Tris a view into the other faction values, so that probably set her up to be able to take the box's test. Maybe that's why the others were unable to pass the tests.....

This movie could have used more to it, though I am not sure what/how to add to it. It just seemed like a very simplistic movie. True, the dream sequences, especially those dealing with the box's tests, were pretty awesome like the first Divergent movie, which helped the movie for interest, but the movie was kinda bland... I am leaning more towards a 3/5 but I will leave it at 3.5 because there were some good things. I thought it was interesting that she was able to face her "demons" throughout the movie (her guilt for killing Will, her longing for her mother, being able to forgive herself, etc). Were there any other character developments, though? Not really....

Anyways, that's my movie review. Thanks for reading! Keep watching for more reviews.

[Note: I did notice the whole "jump across the train track" thing that CinemaSins mentioned and went "....he isn't going to make it" and then went "Are you kidding? He would have landed in FRONT of the train and you know it!!! That train's HUGE.". So yeah, that is definitely a sin against this movie.]
